Theory Test

You can book your theory test here: Theory Test

The theory test can be taken from the age of 17 and must be passed before a practical driving test can be booked.

The theory test itself consists of two sections - a set of multiple-choice questions and a set of hazard perception videos. The questions will cover topics that include alertness, attitude, safety, road signs, and much more. You must score a pass in both sections of the Driving Theory Test to pass the overall test.

The Theory Test pass mark is 86%, you will need to answer 43 out of 50 multiple choice questions correctly to pass.

Some questions are given a case study. The case study will show a short story, that 5 questions are based on.

The Hazard Perception pass mark is 44 out of 75.

When taking the theory test you will need to take along the booking confirmation number that you will receive from the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency, and also your UK photo-card provisional driving license. Without these items, you will not be allowed to take the theory test.

The cost of the theory test is £23

The nearest theory test centre to Rochdale is Oldham. If you wish you can book a double lesson to get you to Oldham and back home.

Practical Test

On the day of your test, you will have a 1 hour's lesson beforehand, to check that all your skills are in order. Therefore you need to pay for a 2-hour lesson and your test fee.

The test will be done in my car if you have been learning in that.

If you would like me to sit in the car whilst you go on the test I can do.

The test centre that will be used is Rochdale Driving Test Centre, Room G10, Globe House Business
Moss Bridge Road
Rochdale
OL16 5EB

There are 5 parts to the driving test:

  • an eyesight check
  • 'show me, tell me'
  • vehicle safety questions
  • general driving ability
  • reversing your vehicle
  • independent driving

The test itself lasts around 38 - 40 minutes and you will be asked to perform one of 3 manoeuvres.

  • parallel park at the side of the road
  • park in a parking bay - either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do)
  • pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for around 2 car lengths, and rejoin the traffic

Independent Driving:

You'll have to drive for about 20 minutes by following either:

  • directions from a sat navigation
  • traffic signs

The examiner will tell you which you have to follow.

The examiner may also ask you to perform an emergency stop. All of these manoeuvres will be covered fully in your lessons, and you will be discouraged from taking your test until I believe that you can perform them to a standard that will enable you to pass the driving test.

During the test the examiner is watching the standard of your driving but also your awareness of the road ahead and situations occurring around you. You are allowed to make 15 minor faults, so long as you do not make the same minor fault three times. Your instructor will go through this more fully with you as you near test standard.

I book ALL of my pupils driving tests. The cost of the driving test is £62.
